5 Trailers Conventions and Iconography - Sophie Nicholls

The Last Song Trailer

This trailer, shows great examples of iconography to show that it is a romantic film trailer, this can be identified through the strong, powerful voice over that draws attention to the key points of the film. It is also set by the beach, which symbolises that it is more likely to be a romantic film than a horror film for example, this is because the beach is associated with love and romance. There is also a small clip in the trailer of pouring rain, which again is associated with love, romance and sadness. The main conventions of iconography to show that it is a romantic film is of course due to the teenage boy and girl shown falling in love, due to the tears and intimacy between both characters to symbolise the romance theme.

The Lucky One Trailer

This trailer uses iconography to show the romantic theme, mainly due to the clips in the trailer clearly showing a man and woman falling in love, and the woman's ex-husband becoming involved and trying to break up the couple. Again, there is a lot of rain, tears and intimacy as there usually would be in a typical romantic film trailer.

Dirty Dancing Trailer

In the very old, classic romantic film trailer, it is clear to the audience that it is a romantic film, mainly due to the romantic theme song and slow motion dancing in black and white. It shows a lot of clips of intimate dancing between two characters falling in love and the powerful voice over, narrating the film trailer.

The Holiday Trailer

This film trailer is clear to the audience that it is a romantic film. It uses a lots of conventions of  iconography, which causes the audience to identify the romantic theme. This film trailer clearly shows that the film is set at christmas time. The film trailer uses lots of red and 'christmassy' songs which shows that it is a romantic film, as these sort of conventions would not be used in a horror or action film. Clips of the films show two couples falling in love and the main house colour (red) is used a lot, which symbolises love and romance, with also very happy and at some points sad music relating to clips in the film trailer.

The Notebook

This classic, romantic film trailer uses a lot of conventions of iconography showing that it is a romantic film. There are clips shown of a couple falling in love, clips of pouring rain, love letters, tears and break ups, which all come together to symbolise the romantic theme of the film. The pouring rain is often used in romantic films to symbolise sadness as well as happiness between a boy and a girl falling in love.

5 Trailers Conventions and Iconography - Sam Jones

LOVE ACTUALLY
Love Actually is a great example of romantic iconography. The house colour is red, which symbolises love and romance. In the trailer, most clips show a man and a woman as a couple, which is how you can tell it is a romantic film. Also because the film is set around Christmas time, the red can also symbolise festivity. Because my genre for our film trailer is romantic, i will consider using the red colour to show the audience that my genre is romantic.

TITANIC
The conventions of the romantic genre that is present in titanic is the love triangle. In titanic, the main female character Rose has a fiance when Jack first starts to love her. This is quite common in romantic films because it causes a problem, normally always leading to the fiance/husband being left for the 'new man'.

P.S I LOVE YOU
This trailer includes conventions of a romantic Drama film. The main convention is that it contains emotional feeling. In this trailer it is the husband who has died at a young age and leave his wife alone. Also in the trailer there is a voiceover which is used to introduce the love theme. Most females would watch this film to see a happy ending, which is why the audience is aimed at women more than men.

DEAR JOHN
The iconography in the trailer of Dear John show signs that this trailer has the genre of romantic drama. It uses the emotional feeling of John fighting in US army and throughout the trailer shows how he has to leave Savannah because he chooses to re-enlist. The obvious convention of this trailer is that a 'boy meets a girl' and the trailer shows how over a few weeks they both fall in love.

THE NOTEBOOK
This trailers iconography includes a voice over throughout the whole trailer which explains the film. Also in the middle of the film the trailer shows how the characters goes their separate ways which is a main emotional convention in romance films because it leaves the audience wondering what is going to happen. Also in this trailer it shows the love triangle which is a main convention in romantic dramas and causes a problem between Noah & Ali.

5 Trailers Conventions and Iconography - Nicole Morgan

The genre of our group trailer is Romance and this research will help me to get ideas for the basis of how a trailer is set out and what to include in the trailer to portray to the audience what the film is about

The Notebook

Like – The trailer portrays both romance and comedy
Different time periods for the characters

Romantic music to fit with the genre of the movie

Slow moving clips which tie in with the theme of the movie

The Lucky One

Like – Shows the two main characters at first showing a bit about the background of each of them so the trailer is understandable for the viewer

It has the emotional song, at first the song choice is light hearted and as the characters fall in love the song choice changes to a more passionate emotional song

Shows both good and bad moments of the film without giving too much away

Like – The trailer has a clear target audience and personalises the universal studios logo to fit the films theme
It has the mix of American and English cast
Quirky music background at first then when it gets more serious when Poppy takes her life more seriously
Entices the audience with the fast moving clips and the certain scenes that are interesting
Includes all cast members
Shows the different genres (Romance, Comedy)

Dislike – Poppy is shown with blonde and brown hair and is unclear whether it is the same person or different if the audience does not know the actress well
